Canberra's Laura Peel, became Australia's newest World Champion when she won the gold medal at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria, this morning.

Laura becomes the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championships title and joins Kirstie Marshall, Jacqui Cooper and Alisa Camplin in an elite group.

Peel claimed her first major title in a nail-biting super-final ahead of American Kiley McKinnon in second with China's Xu Mengtao in third.

Peel's courageous victory came from a triple twisting double somersault.

As the third last competitor in the six-woman super-final, Peel landed a high quality jump and picked up 88.47 points from the judges.

The jump put Peel at the top of the leaders' board and at that time she knew she would podium but the colour of her medal depended on the last two jumps of the competition from Flying Kangaroo teammate Danielle Scott and Mengtao.

Unfortunately for Scott, she fell slightly backwards on her landing, which was reflected in her score of 70.14 points, which pushed the Australian out of medal contention and back to fifth place overall.

The higher ranked Mengtao pinned her hopes of snatching the gold from Peel on a triple twisting triple somersault, a more difficult jump than Peel's selection.

However, Mengtao failed to land the jump cleanly and gained 86.84 points.

A shell-shocked Peel described the win as "disbelief".

"I just wanted to get through to the top six but to come away with the win is unbelievable," Peel said.

"I am so happy to be the World Champion. I can't believe it."

Going into the Championships, Peel thought she "had a shot of being on the podium" but did not expect to be standing on the top step.

"I was a little nervous about the jump selection but I knew that if I wanted to stand on the podium, I knew that was what I had to do," Peel said.

One of the first people to congratulate Peel on her outstanding performance was former World Champion Jacqui Cooper, who originally identified Peel's exception talent as a gymnast and encouraged her to become involved with aerial skiing.

"Jacqui said she was so proud of me, which meant so much to me," Peel said.

"She has always encouraged me and helped me with so many things."

She added that training alongside Olympic gold medallist Lydia Lassila for a number of years as well as a year with Cooper, set Peel on a course to becoming World Champion.

"Training with Lydia I saw how tough a competitor she is and my first year, which was Jacqui's last year, was amazing plus working with my coaches and teammates, has been so great."

The Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation (AMASDF) is recognised and commended throughout the snowsports community for its contribution and support of up-and-coming athletes. In the 4 years since the Foundation was established, in honor of Amelia McGuiness, a gifted and talented athlete and student, the committee has awarded $135,500 in Snowsport Scholarships. This has been achieved by the ongoing support of individuals and the business community.

The AMASDF committee is dedicated to identifying athletes that have the required attributes to make it as an elite athlete in this highly competitive sport. These decisions are often made with the advice and support of NSW Snowsports Discipline Committees, Head Coaches, and Olympians. These groups have firsthand experience and understanding of the determination, dedication, and sacrifices required for a snowsport athlete travelling the pathway towards representing Australia.

In our fourth year of operation, the Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation received 80 applications requesting assistance from young athletes from NSW, ACT, QLD, VIC and WA.

In determining the grant recipients for 2013/14, the committee reflected upon the individual’s performance levels; the potential for achievement over the next 12 months; and the quality of the application. We identified the athletes deserving our assistance with their record of achievement, dedication to their chosen discipline, and commitment to their overall development.

Overall, the Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation have allocated $14,000 to 14 Alpine and S/X athletes; $10,000 to 12 Snowboard athletes; $7,000 to 13 Freestyle athletes, $6,500 to 12 Cross-Country and Biathlon athletes and $2,000 to 2 para-athletes.

In total, $39,500.00 has been allocated to 53 athletes.

Wrap up of the 2013 ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships

The Subaru ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships were held last week and we were lucky that there was the arrival of half a metre of new snow from the previous weekend to top up the courses. This meant that we were able to hold all courses as planned on Front Valley and Centre Valley at Perisher…and we even received 3 days of sunshine!

Over the 3 day competition, 750 students from 65 schools competed from Canberra (28 ACT Schools) and the Southern NSW region with a total of 1575 entries. Alpine and Skier X entries saw the biggest growth in entries from previous years and they remain the more popular events.

65 Teams and 78 individuals have qualified to the National Champs, which will be held in Mt Buller in September.

Congratulations to our ACT-Southern NSW Champions!

The Road to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi from Interschools

Over the past 25 years, thousands of students have been introduced to ski and snowboard competitions through the Interschools Snowsports Championships.

Many athletes have gone from competing for their school, to competing for Australia, and we have seen at least 20 Olympians begin their competition days in NSW/ACT Interschools Snowsports Championships.

With the Sochi Winter Olympics now months away, we look forward to cheering on the athletes that started their racing career in Interschools. It is remarkable that at least 44 members of the Shadow Australian Winter Olympic Team began their snowsports competition careers representing their schools in Interschools Snowsports competitions.

We look forward to cheering on ACT's Laura Peel in the Aerials at the Olympic Games, who competed for Telopea Park School, Merici College and Narrabundah College in Interschools.

Q & A:

When did you start competing in Interschools?
I first competed in Interschools in 1999 when I was in Year 4.

Which schools did you compete for?
I began competing for Telopea Park School in primary school. I then competed for Merici College throughout high school, and Narrabundah College for Years 11 and 12.

What events did you compete in?
I competed in as many events as possible! Alpine every year but also skiercross, snowboard, and moguls a couple of times.

What is your favourite memory of competing in Interschools?
My favourite memory of Interschools is having an extra week of holidays down at the snow with all my mates skiing every day!

What are your goals for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Russia?
My goals are to go out and do the best jumps I can and compete in the super final!

Fast and Female Comes to the Snowy!

The Perisher Cross Country trails will again be setting its sights firmly on encouraging girls and women to cross country ski and enjoy the benefits of our wonderful sport. In 2013, there will be two great “girls only” events on the Cross Country Calender aiming to encourage females onto the Perisher XC trails.

Fast and Female is a new concept to Australia, which aims to support, motivate, inspire and empower girls between the ages of 9 to 19 to stick with sport and adopt a healthy and outdoor lifestyle. It uses world-class female athletes to act as ambassadors and role models. Developed by gold medal winning Canadian Cross Country skier – Chandra Crawford – it has an emphasis on cross-country skiing, biathlon and complementary enduro-sports.

Sochi 2014 Skier X Shadow Olympic Team member, Sami Kennedy-Sim who recently led a cross country dry-land Fast and Female session in Sydney said of the participants, "The level of motivation from our Fast and Female participants was great. We talked about how to set goals and manage the process of achieving them. The girls were very receptive and loved hearing about how to manage themselves as female athletes, as well as students and friends. I can't wait to do it again!"  Fast and Female will include on-snow clinics and activities, lunch and coaching by Australia’s top XC female athletes.
