Fast and Female Comes to the Snowy!

The Perisher Cross Country trails will again be setting its sights firmly on encouraging girls and women to cross country ski and enjoy the benefits of our wonderful sport. In 2013, there will be two great “girls only” events on the Cross Country Calender aiming to encourage females onto the Perisher XC trails.
Fast and Female is a new concept to Australia, which aims to support, motivate, inspire and empower girls between the ages of 9 to 19 to stick with sport and adopt a healthy and outdoor lifestyle. It uses world-class female athletes to act as ambassadors and role models. Developed by gold medal winning Canadian Cross Country skier – Chandra Crawford – it has an emphasis on cross-country skiing, biathlon and complementary enduro-sports.
Sochi 2014 Skier X Shadow Olympic Team member, Sami Kennedy-Sim who recently led a cross country dry-land Fast and Female session in Sydney said of the participants, "The level of motivation from our Fast and Female participants was great. We talked about how to set goals and manage the process of achieving them. The girls were very receptive and loved hearing about how to manage themselves as female athletes, as well as students and friends. I can't wait to do it again!" Fast and Female will include on-snow clinics and activities, lunch and coaching by Australia’s top XC female athletes.
Ski de Femme is a long-standing event and is back again in 2013. It is an entertaining and energetic morning on-snow for Femmes of all abilities and levels to learn or practice their cross country skiing or simply go out on the tracks for a ski with other like-minded ladies. Lunch and prizes conclude a session of skiing, socialising and fun.
Ski de Femme will be held at the Perisher Cross Country trails on Saturday 27th July at 8.30am followed by Fast and Female on Saturday August 3 at 10.30am.

Alpine Youth & Children’s age categories 2012-2013
May 21, 2012
Members of the FIS Alpine Youth and Children’s sub-committee gathered for their annual meeting during the competitions of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Roccaraso (ITA). The sub-committee received reports for future FIS Junior World Championship Organizers in 2013 Quebec (CAN) and 2014 in Jasna (SVK), in addition to reviewing the recently completed 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck.
Alpine Skiing has now adopted the widely used “U” or “under” description for the various children and junior categories and with the season 2012-13 these will now be U14 (Kinder 1), U16 (Kinder 2), U18 (Junior 1) and U21 (Junior 2).
The sub-committee was informed of the decision of the FIS Council that the equipment standard for the 2013 Junior World Championships will conform to the World Cup/European Cup standard. “We have seen a very high level of competition amongst the athletes from more than 45 nations at these World Junior Championships” said Committee Chairman Ken Read (CAN). “And the standard of skiing is impressive from every nation, demonstrating a commitment to training and offering good high performance programs at both the children’s level and junior level, giving us confidence our sport has a bright future.”
The sub-committee will continue to work with improvement of technical regulations for the setting of courses for children and the progression of equipment from children to junior age groups, along with improvements to the Junior World Ski Championships which are now organized at an extremely high level thanks to the commitment of Organizers like Roccaraso.

ACT Athletes Join SERAS
The South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) has expanded its services in 2012 to include athletes from the ACT in some of its scholarship programs.
The academy has entered agreements with Bowls ACT and Snowsports ACT to become program partners along with Bowls NSW and NSW Snowsports. These new partnerships will provide eligible athletes from the ACT with an opportunity to gain a scholarship in the SERAS Lawn Bowls and Snowsports Programs. The academy also has an arrangement with Jack Newton Junior Golf to include talented young golfers from the ACT in its Golf Program from 2012.
The executive director of SERAS Garry Lane sees this as a positive move for the academy. “The Board of SERAS is well aware of the relationship between regional athletes based in NSW and the facilities and competition available in the ACT. We feel that having partnerships with ACT sporting bodies will only strengthen the quality of our programs. We are the only academy in NSW offering a snowsports program so we are perfectly placed to assist the development of these athletes from the ACT” he said.
The following 10 athletes have gained a scholarship with SERAS in 2012: Golf – Tom Armstrong (Amaroo) and Patrick Maher (Fairbairn); Lawn Bowls – Jessica Hogan (Theodore), Jaime Locke (Giralang), Michael McQueen (Spence) and Kristen Steele (Condor); Snowsports – Max Mandl (Griffith), Alia Moore (Woden), Rachel Pearson (Banks) and Hamish Roberts (Red Hill).
