Balmain Cup 1961
Report by Tate Ski Club
The SMA Ski Club Cooma was host club for the 1961 event which had been set down for Saturday and Sunday July 21 and 22.
Longrun and slalom courses were set on Friday and Saturday morning. The slalom was run on the Saturday afternoon then the weather stepped in that night with heavy snow falls burying the cross country course and people’ cars! So Sunday giant slalom and cross country events had to be postponed and were replaced by car excavating, pushing and cursed chain fitting!
Now the caterers had provided for a great party and prize presentation ceremony at the Snowy lodge so, after everyone had left Guthega car park the SMA club were left with 120 meat pies to dispose of! What to do? A pie eating contest was instituted over the Sunday afternoon. The aurthor could only down 3 pies but the contest was won by “none other” than the club patron, Chief Engineer, Neil Warner who downed 12 pies. He was thanked graciously helping out as usual and was awarded the prize…..a ……meat…..pie! I believe he had to be driven back to Cooma!
