As you may know by now, the 1964 Balmain Cup meeting had to be abandoned on the weekend 11 and 12 July owing to bad weather. Only the langlauf was run on Saturday afternoon and CAC team; Klaus Schiller, Karl Erett, Heinz Moosemuller and Knobby Clarke – came fourth after Cooma Ski Club first, YMCA Ski Club second, and Guthega Ski Club third, with SMA Ski Club filling fifth position.
Heavy snow and strong winds during Saturday night buried all cars at Guthega, even those which had shifted farther down the road. By Sunday morning there was no possibility of digging out the cars, and with no sign of the weather abating the remaining Balmain Cup events had to be cancelled. They will be held on the alternative date, 29 and 30 August.
After waiting in vain all Sunday for an improvement in the weather and hoping – also in vain – for the snowplow to free the cars on Monday, the CAC party skied to Smiggins Holes and was lucky to get a bus back to Canberra.
