Balmain Cup 1970

The annual Balmain interclub competition was held at Perisher this year with Cooma acting as host club. The slalom and giant slalom courses were set on Back Perisher near the Sun Valley T-bar, while the "snow revellers" course was used for the cross country run.
The slalom on Saturday was run in reasonably pleasant conditions, although an icy wind at the top made it a little uncomfortable for starting officials and waiting competitors. The course consisted of 50 gates, some of them a little tricky, and tested the ability of competitors with changes from rather open to tighter settings.
The giant slalom on Sunday had to be reduced to one run, due to the adverse weather, which had deteriorated to very strong icy winds with intermittent snow and visibility at times reduced to a minimum. Officials and racers at the top were soon sheethed in icy snow and most breathed a sigh of relief when it was their turn to go down.
The cross country in the afternoon was run under similar conditions and even the expected battle between Martin and Lappi (this time won by Lappi) did not keep too many spectators out of doors.
This year's competition was notably keener, results were closer and teams were younger than in previous years, with at least three teams made up largely of juniors. Our team acquitted themselves well, particularly in the alpine events, and were extremely keen, with 3 club members travelling down from Sydney to race in the team. With that spirit we should do better in the future.
