Balmain Cup 1971
Report Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'
Six teams contested this year's Balmain Cup - ANU, CAC, Cooma, Guthega, YMCA and Tate, the latter being the host club. T he weather during the week was most un-Balmain-Cup-like, with a clear sunny sky, although a cold wind on the hill made things a little uncomfortable at the start.
A tricky 50 gate slalom had been set by Walter Spanring on the Saturday. In fact Walter himself missed a gate in his opening run! Subsequently 36 runners were disqualified for missing gates, most of them missing the same set near the finish. Unfortunately, three of the unlucky ones were leaving us one short of the minimum 4 qualifying runners giving us a penalty which put our team last well behind the rest of the field.
The giant slalom started fast and furious on an icy slope on Sunday but the course softened later, causing some surprise spills and thrills. Our club gave some very good times, and being placed in 4th position put us right back.
The cross country, run after lunch on Sunday, in warm sunny weather gave a variety of snow and terrain conditions, which made the choice of wax impossible. Those whose guess came closest to reality conseqently paid off with a good time. Our team again acquitted themselves well, and inspite of our Slalom results, we were placed 5th overall, beating the ANU team.
