Balmain Cup 1983

Balmain Cup 50th Anniversary - Report Courtesy of Brindabella's 'Christie'

The Slalom was held on Saturday in cold and windy conditions, with Guthega Club taking out the day's honours.

On Sunday the Giant Slalom and Cross Country were held in very cold weather with a gusty-gale blowing, making running and competing in events unpleasant. Poor visibility also made racing difficult.

The cross country event was two laps over a short course of around 1.5-2km giving a total distance of 3-4km. The outward, uphill leg was assisted by a powerful tailwind but participants had to battle on the downhill return, sometimes almost stopped by strong wind gusts. The strong performance by the club in this event placing third lifted our overall ranking to fourth place.

At the Presentation on Sunday a glowing tribute was paid to George Dudzinski for his contribution to Australian skiing prior to the awarding of tve trophy in his honour by Roger Smith. Andreus Glanzig of Guthega won this, placing 2nd overall in the Slalom, 1st overall in the giant slalom and 17th in the cross country.

Balmain Cup 50th Anniversary - Report Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'

Although the weather condititions on the Cup weekend were amoung the worst in recent years, the intermittent snow and rain, the strong winds and poor visibility could not dampen the enthusiasm and dedication of the organisers, competitors and officials taking part in the Anniversary Cup Meeting. Moreover, the races went off without any hitch, there were no protests or unpleasant arguments, courses and timing equipment were ready on time, and the resort management had provided complimentary and concession lift tickets for officials and racers.

Our racers acquitted themselves very well, and again we filled second place - by now this seems almost a CAC tradition. All team members completed their courses without disqualifications, although our Slalom result recieved somewhat of a setback when David Pitchford launched himself into his second run with such power that he jumped clear out of the binding, leaving one ski standing in the starting gate.

On Saturday night a very successful anniversary dinner was held at the Snowed Inn, to which a number of guests of honour had been invited, including several members of the Balmain family, well known competitors from early years, and also CAC's Alan Bagnall, a former president and secretary of the Southern District Ski Federation. Alan also presented the Cup to the winning team Cooma at a most congenial function organised by Tate, the host club, at their lodge on Sunday afternoon.
