Balmain Cup 1985
Report by John Tilley - Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'
The Canberra Alpine Club has been within a very slim margin of winning the Balmain Cup on many occassions in the past ten years and last year we finally managed to clinch it. This was only the second win for the club.
Many of our regular team members were unavailable this year and we took advantage of this to involve some of our younger skiers. Understandably, the Club's performance was affected by this, but I believe that this will be a valuable experience for the future.
Bright sunny weather combined with an atmosphere of friendly rivalry and social interaction with the other clubs made it a very enjoyable weekend. The Balmain Cup competition is a valuable tradition that must be preserved in this age of increasing commercialism and impresonal involvement in skiing.
Congratulations to Lee Bygrave for gaining fastest time in the cross country. His intelligent assessment of the requirements for the particular course and his superior downhill skiing ability gave him a major advantage over his highly rated rivals.
