Balmain Cup 1986
Report Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'
Over the years the skiers in the participating clubs of the Balmain Cup have got to know each other and there is a great spirit of friendly rivalry. For our club, it is the competition that we would most like to win. This year congratulations go to Cooma Club for a great win and to Daven Timms of Cooma Club in particular for winning the slalom, giant slalom and finishing second in the cross country.
This year Guthega Club hosted the event so the races were held there. There was a terrific feeling of excitement as our team of supporters assembled in Jindabyne for a very early start. It was snowing - chains would be required and we could not afford to be held up on the road. However, two of our team members were coming from Sydney and could not be so easrly and were in fact held up and missed the start of the Slalom. But to the rescue came Helen and John Tilley who with no advance notice agreed to race. Thank heavens we had supporters of that calibre.
The Slalom was held in snowy white-out conditions with ice just beneath the new snow. Simon Tilley did the best two runs for our club. The next day the Giant Slalomwas run in brillant sunshine on fast snow and was very spectacular to watch. Rohan Pitchford was third fastest overall in this event.
The cross country race was ru on a track round the floor and sides of the valley between Blue Cow and Perisher. Once again all our team performed excellently. Special mention must go to Tim Greville for skiing for the club for the first time.
