Balmain Cup 1987
Unmitigated success in every possible way! - Report Coutesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'
Yes we won! John Tilley, the club congratulates you on the superb total organisation of the whole event. We also thank Karl Gunther of the Guthega management for being so supportive of the Balmain Cup event and for setting the courses. One of the stars of the weekend was John's "mac" which calculated all results in record time and evidently came up with a satisfactory final answer.
The heros of the weekend though were our skiers, led and inspired by captain Rowan Pitchford. It was not an easy victory. At the end of the Slalom event we were in 4th place and no one was even talking about winning, then we came 2nd in the Giant Slalom and the heat was really on. Our wonderful cross country skiers turned the tables and we were on top.
Lee Bygrave won the cross country event for us and Andy Pineus and Stephen Smith of Cooma Club who came 4th, 6th and 7th respectively giving us four out of the first seven places!
The alpine events were dominated by Guthega Club with their great team of veteran Europan skiers, Doug Burgess of Tate Club actually won the Slalom and Bruno Landolt of Guthega won the Giant Slalom with Doug Burgess coming second.
Stephen Bygrave or our club came third in both alpine events and did so well in the cross country that he won the George Dudzinski Trophy for best overall performance. Congratulations from us all Stephen, a wonderful effort especially as you've hardly skied this season. Stephen's style is beautiful - he looked not only completly confident and in control as he sped down but also full or joy.
