Balmain Cup 1988
Report Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'
No, Canberra Alpine Club did not win the Balmain Cup again this year but our skiers, under the leadership of captain Rohan Pitchford, performed very well giving us third place behind Cooma and Guthega.
The Slalom was held on Saturday morning, September 3, in gale-force winds and very poor visibility at Mt Blue Cow. The race was won by Andrew Korten of YMCA Club.
Whereas Saturday was a terrible day. Sunday was beautiful, warm, sunny and with good snow. The Giant Slalom in the morning was won by Bruno Landolt of Guthega Club.
In order to win the cup, after the alpine events we would have had to gain 27% on Guthega and 12% on Cooma in the cross country. Cross country is our forte but Cooma is also very strong. The course of 5km is really too short for our experienced skiers and tends to favour the very fit whose technique may not be so good. It's a pity the whole six skiers's times could not be counted. Ours did so well! The race was won by Tim Gates of Cooma who beat Lee Bygrave of CAC by only 2 seconds. Stephen Smith of Cooma came third followed by Piers Greville of CAC. Andy Pincus of Cooma came 5th and then followed the rest of CAC team - Tim Greville, Rohan Pitchford, Simon Tilley and Nevin Agnew. Although we didn't defeat Cooma and Guthega in the cup contest we did win the cross country event.
On Saturday night there was a dinner at Blue Cow and the Sunday afternoon presentation ceremony was held in Cooma Club Lodge. Thanks to Cooma Club for hosting an excellent Balmain Cup.
