Balmain Cup 1999

Report by Andrew Frain - Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'

The Balmain Cup is one of those Club events in which it doesn’t matter whether we win or lose; it’s how we played the game. Or at least that’s the story I am sticking to.

That’s right, we didn’t win. We didn’t even come last but we had a great time. The day was overcast with a light breeze blowing. The snow was wet and starting to get patchy but all of that didn’t matter. There were more important things to worry about than the weather, like where was Emily’s (my sister and our reserved racer) boot, but that is another story. We had some competing to do.

The day started off with the downhill. As people started to line up for the slalom we got a taste of the competition, the opposition lining up in the latest in Lycra fashion, none of which was being modeled by CAC competitors.

Credit must be given to the CAC men who competed against ridiculously good skiers. The same applies for the giant slalom. We could only admire and learn as we watched the experts, some of whom have represented Australia in skiing.

We only had two competitors in the snowboarding, Dominic Peel and Captain Adam Boling. Despite a fall during the race, Dom reordered a good time. Adam had several falls but successfully completed the course to qualify in the category of best all round competitor.

The last event was the cross country in which we had a full team, six. Our first three were very competitive. The others there only to make up the team.

In the after competition celebrations we were give the bad news, 5th from six teams, but we didn’t mind. Brindabella, the host club, held the post race party at their lodge before we moved to the Guthega hotel for dinner and presentations.

I am looking forward to next year when we can all give it another go. CAC is to be host club in 2000.
