Balmain Cup 2001

The 2001 Balmain Cup – a Tate perspective by Jamie Pinkerton

The Balmain Cup, the longest running team event in Australia, was again hounded by blizzard conditions. The threat of the strong winds de-railing the Blue Cow T-bar was sufficient enough to evoke a majority vote to only have one run of the Alpine events.

As the wind and snow howled up the Mother-In-Law 30 racers braved the icy giant slalom course. Rupert Winkler won the GS, helping the GSC team to victory in the giant slalom. Strong performances by Tate team members Will Emerton and Jim Wilson lead Tate to placing third in the GS

Besides a slight improvement in the weather and a change of skis the

slalom was identical to GS, with the GSC taking the overall victory and Rupert Winkler placing first. Tate dropped a place in the slalom coming fourth, Will Emerton and Wendy Pinkerton had commendable performances.

The weather finally improved by the afternoon, enabling the snowboarders to have two runs through the GS course.  The Pinkerton’s and the Clement’s

combined to place Tate third in the snowboard event. Jamie Pinkerton won the individual rankings in the snowboard GS, and Brindabella placed first overall.

The Cross-Country event saw some amazing talent as the CAC team brought along a handful of national team members. Ben Sim clocked the fastest time around the 5km course and it was no surprise that CAC won overall. David Clement and Jim Wilson were the top performers from Tate, the Tate team placing third overall.

In the end the alpine performances by Guthega Ski Club helped them to a convincing win of the Balmain Cup. Tate Ski Club placed fifth on the overall standings. The Dudzinsk trophy is awarded to the highest ranked individual from all four disciplines and this year was awarded o Andy Nicholls from GSC. Wendy Pinkerton was the highest ranked female after all four disciplines.
