Balmain Cup 2004

Balmain Cup – Time to Get Serious by Adrian Beresford-Wylie - Courtesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'

The Balmain Cup competition has come and gone for another year and unfortunately the CAC was unsuccessful in its efforts to win the oldest interclub trophy in Australia (71 years old). We last won the cup in 1992.

The Cup was held in fine conditions on Saturday 4 September at Guthega and the club represented this year by a combination of old hands and new talent. Again, credit must be given to Teresa Harrington who offered up both her children for the sake of the Club. Stephen Peel raced in the alpine events and was our leading skier and Laura Peel competed in all of the disciplines, finishing a close second to Wendy Pinkerton (of Tate) in the Ladies All-round competition. Bravo to Laura for that great effort.

New blood also arrived in the form of the McIntyre brothers Tim (alpine) and Chris (snowboard) both of whom performed very well in their first Balmain competition. Mention must also be made of John Sanders, who despite a knee brace, volunteered at the last minute to compete in the alpine events.

In the snowboard our other competitors were Mark Mylek and Ric Sanders both of whom did extremely well. In the cross country Andrew Circosta (who also skied well in the slalom and giant slalom) excelled and recorded the second fastest time. Katie Calder came direct from Victoria to represent the Club and, despite a cold, did well. Bob Hooton also recorded a highly competitive time. Our former president, Jenny McLeod, once again stepped into the breach to give us the necessary numbers for a team.

In the evening a few of us headed round to Guthega for drinks at Tate lodge followed by a pleasant dinner at the Guthega Pub at which Cooma was declared winner of the Balmain Cup for 2004, having edged out Guthega Ski Club in the cross country.
