Balmain Cup 2010

Report by Jane Halton - Coutesy of CAC's 'Frozen Acres'

Our desire to beat Cooma in the Balmain Cup will need to be maintained into next year as, yet again, they were triumphant. Winning three of the four categories (slalom, snowboard and cross country) with Guthega taking out the GS meant we were a respectable third overall.

Our team was not helped by the efforts of Cooma Monaro Local Aea Command's decision o drug and alcohol test vehicles in Jindabyne causing traffic delays of up to 2 hours and the Hoppet in Victoria the same weekend.

Elliot Sutton was the best-placed CAC racer in both the slalom and GS at 4th and not quite realising his ambition to beat Rupert Winkler from Guthega Ski Club this year. Shauna Rigby, Morgan Sutton, Bridgette Boast, Jeremy Lucas and Andrew Frain made up the team.

A late inclusion in the Slalom was Linda Rigby who stepped into the breach while Andrew was detained in the traffic jam created by NSW police. Andrew had made a special effort to come to race for the Club coming down for the day, so the delay was particularly disappointing.

Next came the snowboard where we achieved 4th place. Our best-placed racer was Ric Sanders in 6th position who had also made a special effort to travel from his new job to race for the Club. He was helped by Henry Bessel, Rebecca Brasser, Annie Taylor and Zoe Veenstra.

We finished the day with the cross country race on the tracks strating from the Nordic Shelter. In common with all the other clubs, the Hoppet meant our ranks were depleted and it was a race of the younger talent and the 'old farts' in which I am pleased to say that our side did very well with overall second place. Tim Greville was the leader of the pack in 4th place and was helped by Nevin Agnew, Robert Eddie, Bob Hooton, Tom Agnew and Jenny McLeod. I was deeply grateful to Jenny who, in agreeing to race, spared me the indignity of being last two years in a row! For the record she came 22nd in a field of 28, which in a field of lycra was admirable.
