 review of snowsports act

ACT skiers first formed an association, the Association of Ski Clubs of the Federal Capital Territory and Southern New South Wales in the early 1930s. In 1948 the Southern Districts Ski Federation was set up, which became the ACT Ski Council in 1967. The Council was superseded by ACT Ski Association which was incorporated in 1977. Up to 1993 the Association was an association of clubs but as of March 1993 the Association has become a company limited by guarantee and open to individual and corporate (including clubs) membership. The Association formally changed its name to SnowSports ACT in 2000 to reflect its direction in promoting participation across all snow sport activities.

Membership of the SnowSports ACT provides a forum for participation in the process of policy development for the sport and the lands it is conducted on as well as a number of benefits to the individual.

The main community service of SnowSports ACT each year is the provision of informed advice about alpine sports and the facilities available for recreational and competitive skiers. Its annual ski sale offers skiers an opportunity to look at new equipment and sell and buy older equipment. More recently the sale has been expanded to a Ski Expo and Sale which has opened the doors for participation from a wider segment of the ACT regional business community.

SnowSports ACT conducts events in all snow sport disciplines. Each year a number of alpine and cross country championship races are held.

Members of SnowSports ACT have key roles in administering and organising races ranging from school level competition for the ACT and southern NSW region to International Ski Federation (FIS) races, which involve skiers from other Australian states and overseas. SnowSports ACT is also working to establish a capacity to conduct snowboard events in the future.

With the assistance of the ACT Government and the Australian Ski Federation, now Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA), SnowSports ACT opened an office in 1990 to assist with the running of the races and the progression of the Association from a purely voluntary basis of operation to a professional one employing an Executive Director. The office is open from February through to December.

 recent developments

As the environment in which SnowSports ACT was operating became more complex, a Three Year Development Plan was formulated by board members in 1995. This led to a more focused assessment of where the association was heading and there have been some notable outcomes and achievements.

We have a board of eight directors, who bring a wide range of business and financial skills to the association. All are vitally interested in issues concerning snow sports in the ACT region.

Since 1994 our membership has more than tripled. Steady increases have occurred each year. This has, in no small part, been due to an excellent relationship with Perisher Blue, which has enabled us to market a discounted season pass as one of our primary member benefits. This in turn has led more people being on the snow more often.

We have continued to run a successful and profitable ski sale for the benefit of the Canberra community. In 1997 the Sale was expanded to be an Expo and Sale, providing a greater capacity to involve commercial organisations and giving them a showcase for a broader range of products. The sale moved to a new and larger venue. We invited many ski and mountain activity businesses to participate in the Expo. The response from those who did attend was very positive and encouraging. Our challenge is to find ways of persuading more businesses to participate and to have more people attend.

In terms of junior development, the overall number of juniors has increased each year, this being reflected in the number of participants at the SnowSports Championships. Some schools now regard skiing as one of the more serious school sports and more schools from the ACT are going on to be represented at the Australian SnowSports Championships and are being placed against schools from Victoria and NSW. As the emphasis in the interschool competitions, at least at the initial round, is on participation, one of our aims is to find ways of encouraging even more schools to become involved.

anti doping policy

SnowSports ACT supports Ski and Snowboard Australia’s Anti-Doping Policy (Ski and Snowbaord Australia Ltd Anti-Doping Policy) and adopts it wholly as SnowSports ACT’s Anti-Doping Policy applying to all parties covered by the Anti-Doping Policy.  For the purposes of this Anti-Doping Policy all references to Ski and Snowbaord Australia (the National body responsible for administering the snowsports at the national level) should be read as references to SnowSports ACT (the state body responsible for administering the snowsports in the ACT).

When reading SnowSports ACT’s Anti-Doping Policy the word athlete shall have the same meaning as the words ACT competitor as defined in section 4 of the ACT Drugs in Sport Act 1999.
