Annual General Meeting and Public Forum

SnowSports ACT would like to invite its members to attend the SnowSports ACT Annual General Meeting and Public Forum to be held at 6.30pm on Monday 8th May at Eastlake Football Club, Griffith, ACT.

The SnowSports ACT AGM will be held at 6.30pm, to be followed by a public forum where Dean Gosper, President of Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA), will be in attendance to provide an update on early discussions regarding a possible governance merger between the independent organisations of SnowSports ACT, NSW Snowsports and SSA. Currently the three organisations are overseen by three separate volunteer boards that are each responsible for the guidance and control of winter sports around Australia.

The plan would see the merger of the winter sports bodies into a singular management structure or ‘Unitary Model’ following recommendations made by the Costello review in January 2006.  This review, commissioned by the Australian Sports Commission, observed that snow sports is currently “over governed, relative to their size” and conclusively recommended that “a unitary governance structure would be the most appropriate”.  In line with these recommendations and following several years of stronger cooperation between SnowSports ACT and SSA, we believe that this is a good time to investigate this opportunity further.

The majority of the SnowSports ACT board sees this as an exciting development, which will increase our bargaining power with state and federal governments while also improving governance and operational efficiencies.

Initial investigations indicate that the proposed unitary model would lead to increased funding, better access to facilities for athletes and greater clarity regarding channels of communication.

Winter Sports in Australia is currently in very good shape in terms of on-snow performance, increased visitor numbers to the mountains and results on the international stage for Australian athletes who won 40 World Cup medals in the recent Northern Hemisphere season.

Significant effort by many passionate volunteers has helped to bring about these outcomes and the jobs that they have done are truly amazing. It is because of their efforts that the sport is in such great shape and because of this solid consideration can now be given to a unitary governance structure.

SnowSports ACT, NSW Snowsports and SSA are committed to ensuring that all of the good work that has been done in the states is enhanced through this merger process. All three organisations are determined to preserve existing functionality of volunteer groups and community initiatives throughout the process. This is why we are now seeking feedback from members on specific outcomes, which are important to them. No matter how big or small the issue, we are committed to supporting those needs.

The Canberra meeting on May 8, will ensure that every member is able to have a say about the unitary model concept and raise questions that they may have.

I look forward to welcoming you there and sharing more information on the process as we continue to investigate, analyse and consider our future direction.
