Catch up XC Junior Bentley Walker-Broose

Snowsports ACT recently caught up with Bentley Walker-Broose to chat XC skiing, training ideas and World Cup ambitions

Bentley has been very active in Cross Country skiing events this season, mostly at Perisher, and has achieved some terrific results.

  • Australian Junior sprint U16 men – 1st place
  • Australian Junior distance U16 men – 1st place
  • Australian Open men distance U20 – 2nd place
  • NSW and ACT, sprint and distance U16 men – 1st place

During the off-season, Bentley keeps fit by doing lots of off-snow activities. He regularly mountain bikes, goes running, swimming and is a keen roller skier.

He knows the importance of training and is a strong advocate for following a program. ‘Even a basic one is really good.’ He said. Alongside training lots, he notes that it is important to focus on overall fitness and to make sure that you eat well.

It is important to give your body a break from both training and competing. In order to relax, Bentley enjoys the following: ‘Lots of sleeping, finishing schoolwork, reading, talking to friends and downhill skiing.’

We asked Bentley what his plans and ambitions were for the rest of the season. ‘To get an Australian junior team qualification (I got one on Sunday and I need one more), and to train harder than before to learn new skills that will improve my performance.’ He also hopes to ‘Go and train overseas again as it helped me to improve my skills and to experience what the competition is like in other places.’

Finally, when asked about his long-term goals, Bentley, like many athletes, dreams of making the Australian team. ‘I’d love to get a top twenty finish in a World Cup event, as no other Australian XC skier has ever done it before.

Many thanks to Bentley for taking the time to chat with Snowsports ACT and we wish him well with the rest of the season.
