Catching up with Greta Welin

Snowsports ACT caught up with Snowboard athlete Greta Welin, to chat about keeping fit and preparing for the winter season.

What off-season training have you been doing in the lead up to the snow season?

In the Australian off-season I went to Finland to visit family (as I am half Finnish). This was also a prime opportunity to test out my knee after recovering from a grade 2 tear in my ACL that I got mid-season last year. In terms of dry-land training, I do boot camp sessions twice a week- these sessions focus on strength and cardio. I also do my own agility and balance training throughout the week.

What do you enjoy doing to give your body a break?

I enjoy stretching after a long day out snowboarding or after a hard training session. It allows me to release the tension in my muscles and lets them recover from the day or session. It also means my muscles won’t be sore the next day which is a big plus. When I am not snowboarding or training for snowboarding I enjoy going to lunch and a movie with friends, hanging out with my family and listening to music.

Do you have any tips for other athletes on how to prepare your body for the snow season?

Move! The best thing you can do to prepare for a season of snowboarding is making sure you have strong legs that can hold you up all day. A strong core is also important so you can stay stable and adapt to unexpected changes in the snow beneath you, and to watch out for people around you. If you plan on racing you cannot forget to strengthen your upper body, with a strong upper body you can pull out of the gate faster and a strong start can set you up well for the entire race.

What are your training and competition plans for the season?

This year I am again going to be a part of the Perisher Winter Sports Club Snowboard Cross team. I have registered for Interschools and am getting excited about racing again. I will also be competing in various GS and SBX races in Thredbo in Perisher. I will also be competing in the FIS ANC SBX which is an internationally recognised race.

Keep up to date with Greta’s season via her blog.
