Interschools Update

ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Champs

The ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Championships were held with close to perfect snow conditions and record entries, despite a clash with the FIS Snowboard Cross event in Mt Hotham. The number of schools that competed was up by 17%, with just over 100 schools entering. 863 students entered totalling 1,837 entries over the 5 snow sports disciplines. Skier X for Division 6 (Kindergarten to Year 2) was held for the first time.

Canberra students compete against the local Snowy Mountains and South Coast young skiers and snowboarders in this Championships. Out of the total entry numbers, 334 ACT students competed from 44 schools.

Thank you to all the volunteer course officials, school coordinators and team managers for your efforts in running the Championships.

Slopestyle and Cross Country  – August 24

Slopestyle and Cross Country Interschools events are to be held on Thursday August 24 at Perisher and entries are open now.

Individuals and Teams can enter the Cross Country Freestyle. Teams of 3 are needed to achieve a Team result in the Cross Country Freestyle. Only teams of 3 can enter the Cross Country Relay.

Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle is available for teams and individuals in Division 1, 2 and 3 only.

Each school coordinator prior to entering a student in the event must deem that the student has the appropriate level of skill and experience to compete. Questions that must be asked by each coordinator to the participant are:

• Can you execute a controlled straight air on a ‘green’ or ‘S’ (Small) category jump?
• Can you execute a controlled 50/50 (snowboard) or straight grind (skier) on a 5metre box?
• Do you have the ability to ride/ ski switch in a controlled way down a blue run?

Multiclass Interschools Champs – August 26

NSW Interschools, in conjunction with Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA), will be holding the Interschools Multiclass Championships on August 26 at Perisher, an alpine and snowboard event for students with a disability in NSW, ACT and QLD.

Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in a two day DWA training camp at Perisher leading up to the event on August 24 & 25. The camp is free of charge (with DWA membership) and involves 2 x 2 hour coaching sessions each day with DWA’s volunteer adaptive snowsport guides. It is a basic introduction to racing to help students understand the racing process and to become more comfortable in a race course.

Students compete for their school in their Interschools division (year at school). Paralympic classification is not required to participate in the training program or Interschool Multiclass race.
