Event Information

The meeting place is the Perisher Nordic Shelter at the trail head of the Cross Country Trails. When you arrive at Perisher look for the signage pointing to the Perisher Cross Country Centre/Nordic Shelter  – opposite the National Parks and Wildlife Centre in Perisher Valley and between the Perisher Valley Fire Station and the Man From Snowy River Hotel.

Hiring Gear

You will need to bring your own cross country equipment. Skate or Classic skis are ideal to hire for the groomed Nordic trails at Perisher.

Equipment can be hired from Wilderness Sports (Jindabyne & Perisher) or Rhythm Sports (Cooma).

Please allow plenty of time to collect your gear and If possible, hire them beforehand either online or by calling.

Skate or Classic Skiing – What’s the difference?

When you are looking at hiring equipment, you will notice that you can choose between skate and classic skis to hire. The come and try day caters for both styles so it is up to you what you choose to hire.

Cross country skiing involves two different styles. In Classic style the skis stay parallel most of the time and a grip section on the bottom of the skis stops them from gliding backwards. Skating uses slightly shorter skis designed only for gliding and features a distinctive V shape similar to in-line skating or ice skating.

Getting There

The Perisher Nordic trails are approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Canberra. From Jindabyne take the Kosciuszko Road to Perisher (avoiding the Thredbo turnoff).

There is a day or annual pass payable at the National Parks Gates at Sawpit Creek.

Always check road conditions by listening to the local radio stations or calling the RMS on 132 701.

NOTE:  Chains are required for all non-4WD vehicles within Kosciuszko National Park. Chains must be carried at all times but should only be fitted when advised. Check the NRMA website for interesting and valuable information about driving in the snow. Chains are available from most petrol stations and snowsports equipment retailers in the Snowy Mountains area.

If you want to avoid driving in the snow and fitting chains, the Skitube, 20km from Jindabyne is a good option. From Jindabyne take the Thredbo Road, and turn right at the Skitube turnoff.
